BC ALPINE: EXTERNAL CREDIT INFO

BC Alpine External Credit Program Coach 11 & 12

Synopsis: If BC Division athletes 15 years of age and older successfully complete their CSCF Level 1, pass a SportsAid First Aid training and taping course, and volunteer a minimum of 75 or 150 hours of coaching, they can get 8 high school credits in the coaching area.

Description: An external credit is a Ministry-approved course. It is an organized set of learning activities developed and/or offered outside the BC School system and set out in the Graduation Requirements Order. Students receive graduation credit for completing an External Course. These courses are of an equivalent standard but do not have a match of learning outcomes to other Ministry-Authorized senior secondary courses.

Procedure: To gain credit for Coach 11 and/or Coach 12, one must complete the following requirements.

1. Complete the CSCF Level 1 coaches course. This course is available through BC Alpine. This includes the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) technical, practical and theoretical requirements. Once completed, the candidate will receive an NCCP passport with the student's name, address, sport area, courses completed, date completed, province and date issued. The course fee is reduced by 30% to current or former (not more than one year old) BC Alpine competitors.

2. Complete a First Aid and Athletic Taping Course. This course is available through BC Alpine and the Sports Medicine Council of BC and is called SportsAid. The students will be required to complete and receive certification upon the completion of: Sports First Aid Level I & II; Athletic Taping Level I & II, CPR and First Aid. The certificate is recognized both provincially and nationally and will include the date of completion and the student's name.

3. Complete 75 hours (for Coach 11) Complete 150 hours (Coach 12) of Practical Coaching experience under the guidance of an NCCP Certified Coach or a Coach with a Physical Education related degree. The student must submit a Verification Letter which includes: name of student; number or practical hours coached; team or athletes coached; level of participation; name of authorizing coach including NCCP number or degree completed and date of completion.

4. Report External Credit. When reporting an External Credit course to the Ministry, the school must use the designated course code and indicate a school mark. In order to provide a school mark, the school must first examine course documentation from the external institution (BC Alpine). It is the student's responsibility to present this documentation as proof of successfully completing the course. The External Courses which apply towards graduation are those which have been reviewed and approved by the Ministry and listed in the Graduation Requirements Order. After examining the documentation from the external institution, the school must decide whether to report the student's level of achievement as a school percent and letter grade, or as a Transferring Standing (TS) letter grade. TS has no negative or positive impact on the student's Grade Point Average (GPA). It is the school's responsibility to verify the authenticity of the documents in the rare instance when the document appears not to be genuine or not to belong to the student who presents it.
